 Didn't have time to post earlier. 
 Your intuition is right. Barring rare occassions, 
 brake dust is THE major source of wheel dust. 
 For most convetional vehicles with disk brakes,
 the front brake pads are *bigger*. You can simply
 take the wheel rim off to take a look. Bigger 
 pads, more dust!
 I don't need any other physics/engineering proof, 
 all I did was to switch to different kind of 
 brake pads. Try it yourself. Switch to Axxis
 brake pads, available from 
   http://www.zeckhausen.com/
 The pads are made of different materials, the brake
 dust generated from these pads is much finer grained
 than regular pads. For about $150, you can have
 clean rims forever. 
 Consider this when it is next time for you to change
 the brake pads.
