Kasparov's loss to Deep Blue inspired the creation of a new game called Arimaa designed to be much more difficult for computers than chess, but still playable with a standard chess set. Each year since 2004 a man vs. machine match has been held and amateur Arimaa players have consistently defeated the best Arimaa programs. However, chess is harder than arimaa for the computer because the higher state-space complexity of chess 1050 over arimaa 1043. There are many reasons computer chess programs are more successful than computer arimaa programs. Computer chess had thousands more programmers and 40 more years than computer arimaa. The smaller effort in computer arimaa results in less progress. The rules for winning the arimaa challenge allow the human to win fewer games than the computer and still win the arimaa challenge. The arimaa challenge states:[16] The computer must beat three humans. The computer must win 2/3 of the games against each human. The computer must win a qualification match. The rules excludes custom made computers or computers costing more $1,000. Supercomputers like Deep Blue are barred. Changes to the computer between games are not allowed.
